Did the Orientale impact melt sheet undergo large-scale igneous differentiation by crystal settling?

چکیده
Significant quantities of shock-induced melt are predicted to form during basin-scale impact events and may contribute substantially to compositional variation in the lunar crust through differentiation processes. Knowledge of the evolution of impact melt sheets and the cooling and crystallization processes involved is therefore important to understanding the geology and petrology of the Moon. Here we perform a case study on the Orientale basin and investigate the possibility of differentiation of the impact melt sheet by assessing the thermal and physical processes that drive cooling and crystallization, focusing on crystal settling. Results predict that convective processes within the impact melt sheet enhance cooling and solidification and inhibit settling of crystals ~1.5mm in diameter and smaller, preventing differentiation at or below this size. Impact melt sheet thickness is predicted to have minimal influence on crystallization history, suggesting that crystal size is the primary factor controlling lunar impact melt sheet differentiation.

Impact melt differentiation in the South Pole-Aitken basin_ Some observations and speculations
The stratigraphy of the South-Pole Aitken basin (SPA) interior is consistent with that of a massive impact melt sheet that differentiated to form cumulates. Spectroscopic and geophysical constraints on the stratigraphy of SPA suggest a 12.5 km thick layer of norite above ultramafic pyroxenite and dunite layers. A similar stratigraphy is produced from differentiation by crystal settling of a 50 ...

Sophisticated computer modeling of the formation of lunar multi-ringed basins by impact indicate that substantial volumes of impact melt are produced, leading to melt bodies hundreds of kilometers in diameter and tens of kilometers deep. The impressively large bodies of magma created by the impact of a projectile 50 to 300 kilometers across might have differentiated, producing a zoned body with...
متن کاملOn the evolution of large ultramafic magma chambers and timescales for flood basalt eruptions
[1] Large igneous provinces are characterized by magmatic activity on two distinct timescales. While these provinces have total active lifetimes of order 10–30 Ma, most of the erupted volume is emplaced within 1 Ma in many cases. The longer timescale is consistent with plume or tectonic models for mantle melting responsible for flood volcanism, but the shorter “main stage” timescale is enigmati...

[1] The Greenland ice sheet has been the focus of much attention recently because of increasing melt in response to regional climate warming and can be studied using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) data. To improve our ability to measure surface melt, we use remote sensing data products to study surface and near-surface melt characteristi...
متن کاملLUNAR ORIENTALE BASIN: NATURE OF IMPACT MELT AND VOLCANIC FLOODING FROM CHANDRAYAAN-1 (M3, TMC, HySI)
Introduction: Many impact basins on the Moon are filled with extensive mare basalts [1]. This obscures a) the primary structure of fresh basin interiors, including the nature and distribution of impact melts, and b) the nature of the early stages of the filling of basins with mare basalts. In contrast, the interior of the Orientale basin, the youngest and most well-preserved large basin on the ...
